Spit 'n' Sawdust

Since starting the classes I have trained many Turning point and Aspire service users at various venues and have seen a lot of changes in their behaviour. Many make exercise their new 'healthy' addiction and embrace everything they feel is important to become fitter and healthier. They are asking what they should be eating, some have quit smoking, put on weight (muscles), and have become far more confident. Due to the success of the classes and my realisation that I may be able to help more people I decided to start taking courses through Turning Point and have recently become a Peer Mentor.

Through the 'Active Body Healthy Mind' scheme I've now completed an assistant boxing coaching course which has seen me becoming a fully-fledged assistant boxing coach. I am currently doing work experience at Spit n Saw Dust Gym and I am really enjoying working with Dave Earl. On Tuesdays I now help lead the boxercise in Oxford and I also help deliver a Boot Camp session on Wednesday's back at Spit n Saw Dust. I am so grateful for the opportunities that the Active Body Healthy Mind project has given me and I do feel so much better, in body and mind.

Aspire Oxford

I hadn't played any sports really since I left school. Playing football here has reminded me of happier times, helped me gain improved physical fitness and make me several new friends that have been in similar life situations to me. It's a good enjoyable, constructive way to spend an evening. I look forward to it each week and especially the monthly tournaments where it has been really good to see how we've grown and improved as a team which is very rewarding and has definitely helped improve my mood and attitude.

The Ley Community Oxford

I’ve enjoyed the activities that Jamie & Aspire have offered immensely. The football training is a highlight of my week and the monthly tournaments are a fantastic day out doing something I love with my friends. Doing these sports is a huge boost to my self-confidence and mental well-being, helps me to build a social network and improves my physical fitness which is growing every week. Since joining Active Body Healthy Mind my mental health has seen a great improvement and I feel happier, more motivated and focused on my recovery.

I came to the Sea Fishing activity because I wanted to try something new, saw it as a good opportunity to get out, build relationships, meet new people and see new sights. Breaking the barriers of hostel life and doing something different.
I enjoyed being out at sea and catching fish. I also enjoyed the change of environment and spending time with my peers. I would definitely recommend this activity.
